After a week of rain, Sunday the 7th of June bought lovely blue skies over round 4 of the National Youth Omnium hosted by Manilla Cycling in collaboration with NE Cycling CIC at Middlesbrough Velodrome. Throughout the day we were lucky enough to see some of the best Youth riders in the UK in action, with a full omnium including a Kilo TT, scratch race, elimination race, keirin and points race for the Youth A and B female and open categories, as well as a Youth C support race. It was an amazing atmosphere with live DJ music all day thanks to Cav Cavendish and our own Paul Daly on the commentary and the clubhouse was busy serving food and drinks all day to the hundreds of people coming down to support the riders and spectate the racing!
First event of the day was the Youth B kilos where Eilidh Scally of Johnstone Jets and Gethin Richardson of Maindy Flyers took the wins, followed by some flying times in the Youth A category which saw Theo Wan of Beeston CC and Katie Robertson of Team Ohten fastest on the day. These four names would become well known as they challenged for the win in every race throughout the day.
Next up saw the scratch races were Gethin, Eilidh and Katie all took the wins again before an incredible ride saw local lad and former Manilla rider Lewis Anderson of the Shibden race team take the win after spending most of the race in a two up break with team mate Arthur Sleightholm. Youth Cs then took to the track for their scratch race, and their first race of the day, where local Manilla rider Theo Carter dominated.
Another win in the elimination races followed for Gethin Richardson, whereas the female Youth B victory went to Harriet Sleightholm forcing Scally to have to settle for second. The A races again showed to be very competitive with another local and former Manilla rider, now riding for Beeston CC, Ethan Senyurek-Willis taking an amazing win. The female A category was again taken by Katie Robertson, but only just as Olivia Smallshaw challenged all the way to a photo finish.
After a lunch break for our amazing organisers, commasaires and volunteers provided a short break for the riders, we were back with Keirin racing. With Jackie Curran on the derny, the riders were put into heats based on the current overall standings of the omnium event. The A heats containing all the riders challenging for the overall podium showed off the riders talents and the same winners as the Kilo in Eilidh, Gethin, Katie and Theo came out on top.
Going into the points race - the final race of the day - the overall victory was pretty much sealed for Eilidh Scally and Gethin Richardson in the Youth Bs but it was still all to play for in the Youth As. An insane ride from Olivia Smallshaw saw her go solo and pick up points in multiple of the sprints. It was enough for her to take a dominating win in the points race, but with Robertson still managing to finish in second it wasn't enough to take the overall. In the open category the racing was just as exciting, with a break of three going to sweep up the double points on the final sprint which led to a surprise victory from Edward Worsley. However with Theo Wan only managing to pick up 8 points to Lewis Andersons 12, the over all win went to the local north east rider in front of a home crowd.
We're really proud to have been able to host such an amazing event, special mention to all the organisers from Manilla and staff from NE Cycling CIC, the British cycling commasaires and all the volunteers for making sure the day ran smoothly. Also a massive thank you to all the spectators who came out to watch, and of course to the riders, for putting on a show.
